Sheldon Adelson, an American businessman – and billionaire – died on January 11, 2021. At the age of 87, he lost his battle with cancer, after almost two years of treatments. Il était l’une de ces figures quasi anonymes du poker, que seuls les initiés connaissaient. Mais pour ceux qui avaient déjà croisé sa route, tous s’accordaient pour dire que Nic Szeremeta, né en 1943 dans une petite bourgade anglaise, avait fait bien plus pour l’essor du poker en Grande-Bretagne et en Europe que bien des stars du circuit. L’homme était affable, disert et jamais avare en anecdotes de ce monde quasi-associatif qu’était le poker anglais dans les années quatre-vingt.
Szeremeta, homme de presse qui a vécu des dizaines de vie (dont celle de bookmaker et de dirigeant d’un journal local), aimait l’écriture et les cartes. Il a ainsi combiné ses deux passions en lançant en 1998 « Poker Europa », le premier magazine européen du poker (repris en 2011 par l’équipe de Poker52 pour en faire Poker52 Europa). Cette « institution » mensuelle distribué dans tous les casinos d’Europe, faisait aussi bien la part belle au contingent anglais — comme ses amis les frères Boatman et Ram Vaswani créateurs de hendon Mob, ainsi que des légendes plus médiatiques telles que Dave ‘Devilfish’ Ulliott— qu’aux grands joueurs old school du monde entier.
Co-créateur dans les années 90 de la très active European Poker Player’s Association, il a également créé une émission de poker télévisé qui a participé au boom outre-manche de cette passion, avec Late Night Poker, dans laquelle sa fille Katie fera également une apparition. Sa disparition, à l’âge de 77 ans, en ce début d’année 2021, laisse un grand vide dans le coeur de tous ceux qui ont eu la chance de travailler à ses côtés ou partager un verre de vin à l’ACF lors des European Poker Awards à Paris qu’il avait également contribué à créer.
